PRODUCTION HISTORY
"An American Tree" was performed in 2018 at the Loft, a community theater in Rahway, NJ. In 2023, it was performed as staged readings at the Holmdel Theater Company in Holmdel, NJ, and by the American Theater Group at the Hamilton Stage in Rahway, NJ.

1. Sophronia: 43, A resilient matriarch and mulatto woman, haunted by the memories of her enslavement.
2. Squire: 44, Sophronia's husband, who also carries the heavy chains of their past enslavement.
3. Willie George: 20, their son, born into the promise of freedom but faces the insidious grip of the Jim Crow system.
4. Tolbert Lee Tilly, 41, is an emancipated mulatto man born enslaved, the younger brother of Sophronia, now a loving husband and father with a vibrant spirit.
5. Piety Till, 22, is a young white woman who sees Willie George as her soulmate and is willing to defy her powerful grandfather, Ol' Man Lazerus Till, to be with him.
6. Ol' Man Lazerus Till, in his late 80s, a former slave owner with significant power and influence, whose family history is filled with dark secrets.

Di Shawn J. Gandy has worked in theatre, film and television as an actor, director, playwright, and screenwriter. As co-founder and President of Behind the Veil Productions and member of the New Jersey Creative Arts Collaborative, he’s collaborated with theater groups in NY and NJ. He has studied at Woody King Jr.’s New Federal Theater and George Street Playhouse Education.
